These hand-woven purses are made from leftover handwoven fabric, crafted by a collective of women weavers in the Phek region of Nagaland, using the ancient handloom (otherwise known as 'loin loom') technique. This is a skilful and highly manual process, using no mechanised or powered tools or equipment, relying on the weavers own effort, creativity and keen mental arithmetic to calculate the ornate patterns. Handloom weaving is at the heart of Naga cultural heritage and is so much more than simply a textiles production process or means of generating an income. Weaving has a strong social meaning and is deeply tied to the regional ecosystem. The craft brings people together - typically women - and supports wellbeing through relationships, collaboration and artistic self-expression. The process is extremely low energy and has a minimal environmental footprint and works in harmony with the natural landscape, flora and fauna of the Naga hills. The fertile soil of this landscape has historically provided perfect conditions for growing the cotton, flax and nettle traditionally used in making yarns since ancestral times.
We partner with community-owned weaving collectives who strive to ensure that weavers are able to make a dignified livelihood, and in-turn that craft weaving is sustained for the generations to come. In doing so, this work also contributes to conserving the natural environment of this spectacularly beautiful and ecologically rich region. By purchasing these products you are not only adding a touch of cultural elegance to your décor, but supporting the future of handloom craft weaving for generations to come.
