Vila Tote Bag in Terracotta Ember

£60.00

Tote bag, handwoven on a traditional backstrap loom, featuring an abstract floral motif. The floral motif takes on a geometric form through the backstrap loom, reflecting the limitations and beauty of the technique, resulting in a design that is uniquely its own. The motif flows seamlessly across both the front and back of the tote, creating a continuous and striking visual. Woven in a rich Terracotta Ember hue, the base is accented with beige motifs and finished with braided edges and handwoven straps, adding texture, strength, and refined detail.

All handwoven pieces are inherently robust and made to last. With proper care, this bag will remain a lasting companion for years to come. Each piece is unique, with slight variations in colour and size that highlight the handmade process.

Limited Edition: Senyü’s handwoven pieces are produced in very small batches. A single loom wrapping can yield a maximum of five pieces in the same colour, making each design truly exclusive. Explore more from Senyü Collection – Naga Handloom.

Our collection of handloom handbags is crafted around contemporary elegance and a celebration of the vibrant patterns and motifs authentic to Naga textiles. Other embellishments such as intricate braiding and knotwork add further sophistication. We curate our collection to include both earthy-inspired natural tones as well as lively and energetic colours, so that you can find the perfect accents for your style.

These hand-woven handbags are crafted by a collective of women weavers in the Phek region of Nagaland, using the ancient handloom (otherwise known as 'loin loom') technique. This is a skilful and highly manual process, using no mechanised or powered tools or equipment, relying on the weavers own effort, creativity and keen mental arithmetic to calculate the ornate patterns. Handloom weaving is at the heart of Naga cultural heritage and is so much more than simply a textiles production process or means of generating an income. Weaving has a strong social meaning and is deeply tied to the regional ecosystem. The craft brings people together - typically women - and supports wellbeing through relationships, collaboration and artistic self-expression. The process is extremely low energy and has a minimal environmental footprint and works in harmony with the natural landscape, flora and fauna of the Naga hills. The fertile soil of this landscape has historically provided perfect conditions for growing the cotton, flax and nettle traditionally used in making yarns since ancestral times.

We partner with community-owned weaving collectives who strive to ensure that weavers are able to make a dignified livelihood, and in-turn that craft weaving is sustained for the generations to come. In doing so, this work also contributes to conserving the natural environment of this spectacularly beautiful and ecologically rich region. By purchasing these products you are not only adding a touch of cultural elegance to your décor, but supporting the future of handloom craft weaving for generations to come.
